Sydney Markets Limited (SML) operates Australia’s largest fresh produce and community retail markets.
With an estimated $2.5 billion traded annually at Sydney Markets, the operation has significantly changed and grown since the move to Flemington in 1975. Sydney Markets is now one of Australia’s largest economic centers and is considered to be a global leader.
As with all businesses, location, facilities and infrastructure are critical to continued success. The Markets must ensure its site supports the long-term needs of the businesses and the communities it serves.
The Markets are an integral part of the supply chain for fresh produce and operate in a constantly changing environment. In the past 10 years the method of market operations, the expectations of its shareholders and demand for market services have all changed. SML needs to look ahead to identify trends in the market and determine how it will need to respond to ensure the Markets’ continued viability.
In May 2004 the Board of SML announced the appointment of leading research, property, planning and economics firm, UrbisJHD, to conduct a major study to identify and review the long-term needs of Sydney Markets at Flemington. Work on the Flemington study commenced in earnest in June 2004.
